Sessions consists of four (4) Saturdays or four (4) Sundays 9 am to 4 pm and one evening classroom session running from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Upon successful completion, sailor will demonstrate his or her knowledge of:

Safety: Proper clothing and footwear, selection and use of personal flotation device (PFD), dock safety, prevention and treatment of hypothermia, water hazards and area awareness

Parts of a sailboat: hull, shrouds, stays, sheets, mainsail and jib, boom and mast, gooseneck, stern, headstay, standing and running rigging, etc

Functions of the following: Main and jib sheets, boomvang, halyards, outhaul, tiller, telltails, cunningham, etc.

Define terms: Port and starboard, astern, aft, heel, helmsman, transom, gudgeon and pintle, etc.

Seamanship: Without an instructor or direction: Hoist sails, demonstrate reefing the main, act as helm and crew tacking and jibing (with correct helm and crew communication; on upwind and downwind course), departure from and return to dock, getting into and out of irons, heading up and heading down, crew overboard procedures, sailing solo under light winds and seas

Navigation: Apply the USCG Navigation Rules for prevention of collision

Knots: Tie without assistance in less than 20 seconds: Bowline, figure 8, cleat hitch, reef (square) knot, round turn and 2 half hitches, sheet bend

 The American Sailing Association (ASA) has announced the release of its latest book, Sailing Made Easy, a highly visual, easy-to-read teaching tool for would-be sailors with little or no prior exposure to the sport. Sailing Made Easy is the new official textbook for the ASA's Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard course, ASA 101.
Setting a new standard for sailing education materials, Sailing Made Easy was written by a team of expert sailing instructors with more than 150 years of combined sailing experience. It was coedited by Peter Isler, world famous America's Cup winning navigator and commentator, and Jeremy McGeary, a 30-year veteran sailing writer and editor. The text closely mirrors the customary sequence in which beginning students are introduced to the theory of sailing, the boat in which they will learn, and the skills they will acquire.
When I took the test, I realized how much I have learned in such a short amount of time...thanks to a great class and fabulous instructors. I still have a lot to learn, but think I have a great foundation.

Celestial Navigation Standard (ASA 107)
Prerequisite: None
General Description: Able to demonstrate the Celestial Navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailboat on an offshore passage. The practical application is conducted in the Offshore Passagemaking Standard.

Coastal Navigation Standard (ASA 105)
Prerequisites: None
General Description: Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this Sailing Knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.
This class consists of four classrooms sessions, Wednesday evenings 6 to 9 pm
