Upcoming SEA Events Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

Be sure to keep a good "look out" for some exciting SEA events coming up:

Leah Pepe and Wayne McIntosh will be speaking at the Sports Basement's (Presidio) Speaker Series on September 2. Come on by and hear their advice about sailing The SF Bay and Beyond. 6:30-7:30. There will be refreshments and a drawing for a free Intro Class next year - tell your friends!

And, more soon to come:

We are organizing tours with the Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Assist on Yerba Buena Island, planning exciting dinghy racing and coordinating a Halloween Pirates' Pumpkin Hunt on the waters of Richardson Bay! We will also participate in California Coastal Commission's Coastal Clean Up next month.

As you well know, SEA is a member driven, community sailing school. Your participation in helping make this organization strong is key to its fun offerings and your learning experience. If you've got ideas for future activities, tours and events, let us know! And, better yet, help us organize them!

"Do Something That Scares You!" SEA Member says. Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

SEA member Jennifer McKenna says "Do something that scares you!".

Bow Yoga in San Rafael hosted Jennifer McKenna last weekend for a presentation about her voyage into the sailing world. Jennifer talked about how she challenges herself regularly and how facing fear helps build confidence and makes her a better person  - on the water AND on land.

Jennifer learned sailing through SEA, and she is now an avid and respected Santana 22 racer. We wonder what her next challenge will be!

The "Unoffical" SEA Clubhouse is OPEN! Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

seahorseFINALLY, after two years, SEA's "unofficial" clubhouse is open again!

The Seahorse Restaurant, conveniently located at the entrance of Clipper Harbor, is casual, fun and the owner Mauro is very friendly. Serving beer, wine, seafood and pasta, we highly recommend a stop after dinghy and Santana sailing.

Be sure to tell them you're with Sailing Education Adventures!
And, we hear Mauro wants to learn to sail - let him know how much fun you've been having.

Sailfest 2010 Greets "Dawg" Racers Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

SEA sailcampers and SEA adult "Race for the Dawg" racers converged at Marin Yacht Club on Saturday, August 7 for Sailfest 2010 - SEA's 26th year!

This year Summer Solstice, 34 Tartan, took lead and her timing was "on time" - Who was supposed to be the official time keeper?! Skipper of Kelly Shawn, 22 Santana, placed third and protested - "what about PHRF ratings"! Shoulders were shrugged, and the skipper was consoled by a bottle of limoncello*, homecrafted for SEA Members only!  Daisy, Fayaway and Shockwave all paraded into the channel to officially begin the events of the day.

Campers, parents and SEA members raced, capsized and had plenty of water fun on the Picos.

A HUGE appreciation to AJ, "The Extraordinaire", for spearheading this year's festivities (SEA would be a sunk treasure without her enthusiasm, skill and tireless effort!). Another huge thanks to member Karen Brenner and MYC liaison Val to ensure sailors were well fed. And, of course, thank you Wayne and Sandor for making the day fun for all!

*Rumor has it that the limoncello recipe can be gotten with exchange of promised brewed donations. Contact author of this article for more info.

SEA - Stitched In Time Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

Performing a singlehanded miracle, SEA member Caroline Smith took the "hem" and stitched our tattered strips of canvas into ship-shape covers.

Thank you, Caroline Smith! You're what makes this group shine - or, in this case, well stitched together. We appreciate your volunteer time, energy and ability!

You get first dibs on our canvas sewing machine!

SEA Members in Santana 22 Nationals Print E-mail
Written by Barbara McVeigh

sThe Santana 22 ("Tuna Fleet") Nationals last weekend proved to be exhilirating, to say the least. Seven current and past SEA members were spotted in the full two day race mix, competing with, arguably, the fastest and toughest SF Bay Area Santana 22 racers.

Kathy Stierhoff's Tackful and Leah Pepe's Kelly Shawn clearly put the heat on, and offered a good show. Congrats to them and to crew Scott Askew, Katka Letzing and Barbara McVeigh, as well as to Jennifer McKenna on Tchoupitoulas. Special congrats to Race King Frank Lawler who offered his endless advice and support to all!

Check out the scene on Leah Pepe's Kelly Shawn!

And, more pix here and results
